The Julian and Gregorian Calendars
If you answer that question, most likely you are giving an answer based on a calendar that goes all the way back to one put in place by Julius Caesar.
Caesar’s calendar, aka the Julian Calendar, was pretty good, but it developed problems over time, so it was modified in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII.
This calendar, the Gregorian Calendar, what we’ve been using for the last several hundred years, and it works pretty well.

Gregorian calendar is the calendar used in most parts of the world. It was introduced in October 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII as a minor modification of the Julian calendar, reducing the average year from 365.25 days to 365.2425 days, and adjusting for the drift in the 'tropical' or 'solar' year that the inaccuracy had caused during the intervening centuries. The calendar spaces leap years to make its average year 365.2425 days long, approximating the 365.2422-day tropical year that is determined by the Earth's revolution around the Sun...

The Gregorian Calendar vs. Julian Calendar (Why Russians Celebrate Christmas in January)
Many Russians celebrate Eastern Orthodox Christmas on January 7th — two weeks after Americans (and most of the world) celebrate Christmas on December 25th. This makes no sense to most Americans, like how Chinese people celebrate New Years in February. But these things happen for a reason: Russians celebrate Christmas according to the 2,000-year old Julian Calendar, while Chinese New Year is based on the 2,500-year old lunar calendar. We celebrate these ANCIENT traditions using ANCIENT calendars like the heathens we are! For conducting everyday, non-barbarian business, we use the modern Gregorian calendar like the other civilized folk.
In this video, I'll cover Gregorian calendar history, Julian calendar history, and a bit about the Roman calendar that was replaced by Julius Caesar. I'll s...

6 Things you may not know about the Gregorian Calendar
In 1582, when Pope Gregory XIII introduced his Gregorian calendar, Europe adhered to the Julian calendar, first implemented by Julius Caesar in 46 B.C. Since the Roman emperor’s system miscalculated the length of the solar year by 11 minutes, the calendar had since fallen out of sync with the seasons.
European Protestants, however, largely rejected the change because of its ties to the papacy, fearing it was an attempt to silence the Protestant Reformation. It wasn’t until 1700 that Protestant Germany switched over, and England held out until 1752. Orthodox countries clung to the Julian calendar until even later, and their national churches have never embraced Gregory’s reforms.

The date, the 4th of October 1582 –
On this day, Pope Gregory the 13th initiated the Gregorian Calendar.
Today the Gregorian Calendar, also sometimes referred to as the Christian Calendar, is the most widely used in the world. Before the Gregorian calendar was adopted, much of the Christian World used the Julian Calendar, which had been in use 45 years before Christ.
Christian leaders wanted to keep Easter tied to spring, however began to see a drift in Easter’s placement due to its date being governed by the vernal equinox, and the Julian calendar’s gaining of one day on the tropical, or solar year, every 128 years.
Although the Julian calendar uses a leap year system very much like the Gregorian calendar, the Gregorian system omits a leap year – a year with an extra day occurring every four years, every four hundred years. The Julian calendar averages out as being 365.25 days long – which is actually several minutes longer than the tropical calendar. In comparison the Gregorian calendar is on average 365.2425 days long. This minute difference means that instead of gaining an extra day, in comparison to the tropical year, every 128 years, the Gregorian calendar gains a day only every 3 226 years.
As well as being 10 minutes and 48 seconds shorter than the Julian Calendar, the Gregorian calendar also skipped 10 days to compensate for calendar to tropical calendar drift, meaning Thursday the 4th of October 1582, was followed by Friday, 15th October 1582.
Although named the Gregorian Calendar, after then Pope Gregory 14th, the reforms were largely based on modifications suggested by Aloysius Lilius, and authored by he and Christopher Clavius. The calendar was at first adopted only be Catholic countries, but went on become common use in Protestant countries too, and later by almost every country in the world.
Everything becomes history. I’m Wilfred Cunningham, until next time, goodbye.

The calendar spaces leap years to make its average year 365.2425 days long, approximating the 365.2422-day tropical year that is determined by the Earth's revolution around the Sun.

I'll show you the differences between Julian and Gregorian calendars, and explain how these two calendars cause Russians to celebrate Christmas in January 7. Or in my case, as a Russian-American: to celebrate American Christmas on December 25th and Russian Christmas on January 7th!
